Scrap Magnet in a foundry with a scrap yard

Magnet with deep magnetic field
SmartPickTM control technology for fine adjustment of the magnetic field. The material weight needs to be dosed to obtain the right mixture for steel production.

Full lifting force, finely dosed

The foundry in Weilbach is over 200 years old. Since 1974, Linde Material Handling GmbH has been operating the site with its long tradition. At the subsidiary, the group manufactures forklift counterweights. They ensure that Linde forklifts do not tip over when transporting loads that weigh up to several tons. But before the forklifts can carry heavy loads themselves, TRUNINGER magnets handle tons of scrap raw materials accurately dosed before they are cast into counterweights for forklift truck production.

TRUNINGER scrap magnets – hard on the outside, smart on the inside

The different types of scrap are stored in large troughs in the warehouses as well as outside. The scrap metal comes as pellets, strips, or lumps and in all other imaginable forms. To turn it into steel, it is melted according to a special recipe.
A large, robust, and powerful TRUNINGER scrap magnet that features a deep and strong magnetic field is used to transport the metals to the furnaces. It penetrates the scrap bunches deeply and holds the parts securely to the magnet before operators let it slide into the chute that leads to the furnace. "To ensure that the magnet delivers forces exactly to the point" explains Rolf Truninger, Co-Managing Director of TRUNINGER AG," we optimized its field geometry in so-called FE simulations beforehand." His partner Felix Truninger adds, "Our experts can simulate the operating conditions on the computer and thus optimise the magnets increasing their performance."
The result: load-optimized magnets that offer high efficiency, i.e., low energy consumption and low dead weight in relation to their lifting capacity.

Dosage improves lifting – thanks to intelligent controller technology

The octagonal TRUNINGER "Light Scrap Torus Magnet" shows its strength in combination with the "SmartPickTM" controller module.
Because during blending (mixing of different metal in foundries) the operator can finely dose the scrap quantity to be transported. To do this, he steplessly adjusts the force of the magnetic field and picks up the exact quantity of unrefined iron, steel scrap or broken cast iron the steel recipe asks for. That is how he ensures, the steel produced meets the requirements for the forklift counterweights.

Decisive factor: Quickness

A further key criterion in the choice of magnet is its ability to demagnetize the lifted loads quickly and reliably. "In addition to selectively picking up material, brief switching cycles play a decisive role because they keep the capacity of the system high," explains Steffen Trunk "and with the TRUNINGER’s controller technology, we have an excellent solution available that has absolutely proven itself."
