Retrofitting a highly diversified warehouse

Ensuring safe operations and safeguarding flexible delivery capability in the long term: These competitive advantages have motivated wholesaler Eisen Schmitt to work with TRUNINGER for well over 20 years.

The pro for the pros

The highly automated company is specialized in supplying steel to steel traders since 1930 and operates Germany's largest steel trade. On 33,000 square meters, it maintains high-bay warehouses with 9,000 cassettes and stocks some 15,000 items ranging from bright steel, quality steel, rolled steel, tubes and non-ferrous metals to stainless steel in all types conceivable.

A technological edge is particularly important in the cassette warehouse. Thanks to the intelligent control technology of our magnetic lifting systems, the system operators can take out the required number of items from a cassette with just one lift. The strength of the magnetic field determines whether one, two, three, four or more items are lifted and moved to the picking station.

Operational reliability: Lifting magnet systems as the bottleneck

With a turnover of around 1,000 orders every day, picking technology in warehouses is particularly relevant. If the magnetic technology stands still, the entire warehouse stands still. "We rely on TRUNINGER technology", explains operations manager Nagel, "because in over 20 years, the technology has proven ideal for us". The retailer has 15 TRUNINGER lifting magnet systems and controllers in use with a wide variety of magnets of all sizes—from the system for picking out of cassettes to heavy-duty magnets for round bars that weigh several tons per meter. TRUNINGER stand for maximum availability and also for maximum versatility. "Every magnet system can be used absolutely flexibly", emphasizes Eisen Schmitt operations manager Nagel. Also TRUNINGER's after-sales service plays an important role for Eisen Schmitt. This is why the Karlsruhe-based company relies exclusively on TRUNINGER and its service team here. "We can absolutely rely on the service people. They let us easily integrate the maintenance cycles into our processes and when they are on site, the job is done very quickly", Nagel knows. This is due to the solid blocks TRUNINGER technology relies on. Almost no moving parts, so that maintenance demand remains low and availability is statistically > 99.9%.

Residual magnetism—quality makes the difference

Another distinguishing criterion that makes TRUNINGER the perfect partner for Eisen Schmitt is the low residual magnetism caused by the systems. Especially for hard magnetic material used in mechanical engineering, this is a decisive quality feature. Since Eisen Schmitt supplies numerous mechanical engineering companies, special attention is paid to the so-called remanence value, the residual magnetism remaining in the material.

In the next three years, plant manager Lothar Nagel wants to upgrade all magnet systems with the modern TRUNINGER SmartPickTM controller technology. "Retrofitting is an absolutely target-oriented strategy, especially for lifting magnet systems," knows TRUNINGER Managing Director Felix Truninger. "Because our magnet technology is almost indestructible, only the controller technology becomes outdated with new technologies opening up new possibilities and become faster as well as safer." And Co-Managing Director Rolf Truninger adds, "Our systems are a long-term investment in value retention, availability, and sustainability. That's what TRUNINGER stands for."
